Why Hate the Rogue
and Remy Pairing?
There has been a lot of controversy in the issues of X-Treme X-Men, most notably issues 32-36. The writer of this comic series, Mr. Chris Claremont, is responsible for the big rift that has been created between Rogue fans and Storm fans. In the past there have been plenty of “love triangles”, as they are called (i.e., Scott Summers, Jean Grey, and Logan). However, the new triangle that has been created is not getting an “okay” from all fans – especially Storm fans.
After Rogue and Remy’s return to the X-Treme X-Men comic books Remy joined with Ororo on a mission. There had been hints and clues of a possible romance problem between Remy and Rogue. This became even more believable when Rogue lept into Bishop’s mouth to kiss and frisk him – and even more believable when Remy decided to give Ororo a kiss. As the scene goes, and this is not verbatim, Ororo is disappointed in the final results of the kiss:
Ororo: Rogue is going to kill us.
Remy: You may have a kiss, chere, but Rogue has my heart.
It may seem like an innocent, sweet thing to say – and things might not be rough if Mr. Claremont had left it there. But the tragedy continued as Igor Kordey drew Ororo’s sad, lonely, and weak facial expressions on the page – making her seem less than majestic, and that will upset any Storm fan. Even more devastating is the continual bashing of Ororo’s character as she is deprived of her image as the “Beautiful Windrider”.
Rogue: Where have you been? Ah was startin’ t’ believe that Storm had stolen you away forever.
Remy: She tried her best, chere. But you an’ me both know she didn’t have a prayer.
And after that the two embraced for a kiss, right in Ororo’s plain sight. Ororo, who is now being drawn with a boyish haircut and far too little details that display her African American features, is then ignored by Remy who had not spoken to her through an entire flight from Texas to California (mind you this is not an airplane flight but Storm carried Gambit the entire trip).
More importantly, however, is the realization that before all of this had even taken place – plenty of time before a Remy and Rogue pairing was even fathomed, Remy was initiated into the comic world with a major goal for his character: to pair him up with Ororo. Despite the truth of this statement, and it’s validity, Chris Claremont clearly expressed that he doesn’t plan to put Ororo and Remy together. Why? Because he claims it’s “too predictable”. So, instead of giving Ororo the man that was created for her she is given bad character development and inconsistencies in her own mini series. Her fellow characters and the man who writes her bash her.
And who isn’t sick and tired of the Rogue and Remy relationship? It doesn’t matter how long they’ve been together – they just don’t click. In nearly every scene the two are seen together there is tiring angst and little resolution to their problems. Rogue and Remy’s relationship clearly cannot stand the test of time as both members of the couple are out kissing other people, intimately, which only makes room for more angst and more unfounded drama. If your ‘lover’ abandoned you in Antarctica to die, would you continue to pursue that relationship or would you realize that there was someone else who wouldn’t abandon you? Would you notice and began to admire and adore the person who always accepted you despite all the wrong you did? Wouldn’t you notice the person who stood up for you when everyone else turned their backs and considered you better off if you were dead?
These are the reasons why the people on this fanlisting despise the Rogue and Remy relationship: 1. Ororo has been identified as the third person and the odd-man out and her character has been bashed frequently and brutally because of this new position, 2. Remy was created for Ororo so why not put him where he belongs, and 3. The Rogue and Remy angst is played out and tiring to read; there is no need to pursue this dry pairing.
We’re not saying we hate the characters as individuals – but their relationship is just garbage at its worst.
